Hip pain is a common problem, more than 76 million people in the United States report that they experience some form of hip pain — that’s a significant portion of the population. Deciding on hip pain treatment can be confusing because there are many causes. It is important to make an accurate diagnosis of the cause of your symptoms so that appropriate treatment for hip pain can be directed at the underlying problem.
The hip joint attaches the leg to the torso of the body. In the hip joint, the head of the thigh bone (femur) swivels in a socket. While many causes of hip pain can arise from the joint itself, there are numerous structures surrounding the hip that can also be the source of pain. Pain can arise from structures that are within the hip joint or from structures surrounding the hip. The source of the pain must be determined before a hip joint pain treatment plan can be started.
Treatment of Hip Joint Pain at the Zehr Center
Trauma is often the cause of hip pain, but any source of inflammation may cause pain in the hip area. Aching pain in your hip joint, which shoots down your medial thigh, or into your groin area can all originate from an injury or abnormality in your hip. However, hip pain may or may not be caused by an injury to the hip — it may actually stem from an injury in another area of the body.
Hip pain treatments often include rest, ice and heat application, stretching, physical therapy and anti-inflammation medicine. Because not all of these treatments are appropriate for every condition, it is important that you seek a professional opinion before beginning any treatment of hip pain.
