What most people call the shoulder is really several joints that combine with tendons and muscles to allow a wide range of motion to the arm, from scratching your back to throwing the perfect pitch. Most shoulder problems involve the soft tissues, muscles, ligaments, and tendons, rather than bones.
Shoulder pain is an extremely common complaint, and there are many common causes of this problem. It is important to make an accurate diagnosis of the cause of your symptoms so that the appropriate shoulder pain treatment can be directed at the cause.
Shoulder Pain, Replacement and Successful Surgery
If you are unsure of the cause of your shoulder pain, or if you do not know the specific treatment recommendations for your condition, you should seek medical attention. Some signs that you should be seen by a doctor include:
- Inability to carry objects or use the arm
- Injury that causes deformity of the joint
- Shoulder pain that occurs at night or while resting
- Shoulder pain that persists beyond a few days
- Inability to raise the arm
- Swelling or significant bruising around the joint or arm
- Signs of an infection, including fever, redness, warmth
Treatment for shoulder pain often includes rest, ice and heat application, stretching, physical therapy, anti-inflammation medicine and cortisone injections. Because not all of these treatments are appropriate for every condition, it is important that you seek a professional opinion before beginning any treatment of shoulder pain.
